Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a cosmetic treatment which involves small injections. They are used to add volume to the soft tissue in the face – in areas such as the cheek, mouth, lips, around the eye and the jawline – combatting signs of ageing by filling in wrinkles and addressing dark circles, as well as thinning lips. They use a gel which usually includes hyaluronic acid.

You’ll normally see immediate results which can last for over a year, depending on the area or filler used and every patient’s lifestyle factors.

Dermal Fillers And Botox: What’s The Difference?

If you are unacquainted with the range of cosmetic facial treatment options, you might be unsure of the difference between dermal fillers and Botox. The truth is that these two treatments, while similar in some respects, are virtually a world apart in others.

Botox and dermal fillers are both minimally invasive skin treatments with the same general objective of addressing wrinkles, but among the key differences is that Botox can only be effective on facial lines which are the cause of muscle movement, rather than a loss of plumpness. That means that Botox can be effective in treating ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes, as well as horizontal lines which are found on the forehead. That’s because these lines are caused by squinting or frowning. It will not be effective in addressing ‘static wrinkles’ which are facial contours that are the result of sagging lower down in the face including ‘smile lines’ (nasolabial folds).

It should also be noted that Botox works in an entirely different way to dermal fillers. Botox uses botulinum toxin and serves to block out nerve signals in the muscles when injected into target areas. This has the effect of ‘freezing’ the muscle, and consequently, the lack of movement in the targeted area may soften wrinkles, or reduce them significantly.

What Are Dermal Fillers, And How Do They Work?

Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like substances that are injected under the skin. They can address a number of common concerns including smoothing of deep under-eye circles, lifting of cheekbones, volumization of the lips, smoothing of lip lines and nasolabilal folds (the creases that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth), and rejuvenation of the hands.

Dermal fillers can be composed of a variety of substances, some naturally occurring and some synthetic. One of the most common compounds used in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin, and it plays a major role in keeping skin hydrated and volumized. HA fillers, depending on their specific chemical makeup, can last from six months to much longer before being gradually absorbed by the body.

One of the main benefits of HA fillers, aside from their natural appearance when injected, is that they can be dissolved by a special solution in case of an adverse event, or if the person dislikes the appearance. Also, most HA fillers are premixed with lidocaine, a numbing agent, to maximize comfort during treatment.

Is The Procedure Painful, And Is There Any Downtime?

Dermal filler injections are typically well-tolerated, and many products contain a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the procedure. While there may be some redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, most people can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.

How Long Do The Results Of Dermal Filler Treatments Last?

The duration of results depends on the type of filler used and the area of treatment. On average, hyaluronic acid fillers can last from 6 to 18 months, while other types may offer longer-lasting effects. Results are not permanent, and touch-up sessions are often required to maintain the desired look.

Who Is A Suitable Candidate For Dermal Filler Treatments?

Dermal fillers are suitable for individuals who want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, add volume to certain areas, or enhance specific facial features. A consultation with a qualified practitioner can determine if you are a good candidate and help you set realistic expectations.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Dermal Fillers?

Even though Dermal Filler treatment is a minimally invasive procedure, it can still have some side effects.

The more common side effects include swelling, redness, pain and bruising. These side effects can last for up two weeks and will go away on their own. Other side effects include irritation, discoloration, infection, allergic reaction, or uneven product in the skin

Under rare cases, patients also experienced bumps (granulomas- over healing skin) underneath their skin, that can be treated by medicines, injections, or surgery.

These risks can be minimized by choosing a skilled and experienced practitioner who follows proper safety protocols. It's crucial to discuss any concerns or allergies with your provider before the procedure.
